Online Poker Forums: Another Tool To Improve Your Game

Posted by admin | Online Casinos,Poker | Monday 19 July 2010 3:54 am

Almost any activity you can think of has an online forum dedicated solely for the discussion and exchange of information on that particular topic. Forums have been around in the form the dial-up bulletin boards and internet newsgroups that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The internet forum has since evolved into one of the most used tools the internet has to offer. Any topic you can imagine more than likely has numerous forums with regular participants. Poker is absolutely no exception, as there are thousands of poker websites which offer their visitors a forum to join in on the discussions.

Poker forums are a magnet for the novice as well as the seasoned poker professional. These forums feed the avid poker player the much needed information in all aspects of poker play, types of poker and the latest news. Some poker forums are solely for announcing the big poker tournaments which run throughout the year. The reader gets filled in on where the tournament is to be played as well as the particulars on play qualifications.

Poker related forums can also be game type specific. Sites are popping up everyday based solely on one game in particular, Texas Hold’em. Do a web search for that topic and you’ll be amazed at the number of sites which have devoted themselves to this one game. Seven Card Stud and Omaha Poker are also very popular forum topics as well. These card games have enough of a loyal following that the site owners receive thousands of visitors each and every day. Site owners offset the cost of running there forums with advertising related to the niche.

There are certainly some very good reasons why poker players would want to search out and become a member of these forums. One of which is the fact that a player can improve his game by frequenting high quality poker forums. By high quality, the forum should be well maintained with fresh news and happenings in the world of poker. If the last entry is more than a few days old, then the forum is a slow one. A slow forum is not necessarily a bad forum, but if you’re looking for updated content then you can do better.

The benefits a player gets from poker forums are:

Staying Updated: The world of poker has a lot of tournaments being held all year round. Poker players can be advised of local tournaments in their area and who will be there as well as the fees and prizes involved.

Game Improvement: More experienced players trading game stories and past experiences of how they handled a situation can help the novice player when faced with the same circumstances.

Tips and Tricks: Talk to a veteran poker player who’s willing to mentor and I’ll bet you’ll learn more from them than you will any of the poker books you’ll find for sale. A smart poker player never takes the time to think he can’t learn a new trick or two, and neither should you. Learning the game of poker is easy, but to master it takes a lifetime. Take advantage of the free advice those who have played many years have to offer.

Poker forums are a tool which any poker player can use to brush up on their game, catch up on the news in poker, or find out how last Friday night’s garage game went with Fred and the gang. Visit just a few of these gems, and you’ll become a card carrying member of the poker forum club.

Playing Longhand Limit Holdem Poker Games

Posted by ArthurD | Online Casinos,Poker | Tuesday 4 May 2010 3:19 pm

To play longhand limit holdem you will have to understand the game as it is. In starting hands most beginners make mistakes. They simply play them too often. As the name says longhand limit hold’em is a game where patience is values the most, so a player should have patience until he or she gets the proper hand to play.

Once on the flop you can either have a good hand or have a second-best hand or just have a drawing hand. If you have the best hand it means you have either a three of a kind or a full house even. So in this situation you know you will probably win. It is recommended that you make others stick around as much as you can and get from them as much money as you can.

If you have the second-best hand then you should either treat it as a winning hand or fold. Yes, you should fold even with a great hand because being second won’t bring you any pots. A second best hand is something similar to Ac,Qd and on the flop Kh, Qc, 4s.

A drawing hand is a hand that holds a great drawing odd. So, if you have for example two hearts and there are two more on the table. Then you can draw for a flush but be careful not to draw for a second best hand because it is not worth it as illustrated above.

These were the winning possibilities you have on the flop in longhand limit poker. If you are already on the flop and you have nothing at all or a low pair that has no value, then it means you have chosen a wrong hand to play, it means you should have probably folded pre flop and now all you can do is fold. Pay attention – a hand that has a drawing possibility is not “nothing”.

Above you have been presented with some basic strategy for long hand limit poker. The good thing about this game is that almost all situations can be compared with others and no tricky hands can put you in difficulty. You only have to remember that when so many people are playing and you are not holding the best hand, someone probably does. So fold when you should, especially pre-flop with very low hands or hands that have a low value. It should be easy enough if you are just paying attention to your game.

Online Video Poker Games: Strategy For Fun

Posted by ArthurD | Online Casinos,Poker | Monday 26 April 2010 6:05 pm

Some people that enjoy a good poker game at a buddies house on Saturday night also enjoy heading to a casino to play the game. A casino offers not only traditional poker games that are played at a table, but also offers video poker games. The biggest difference between table poker and video game poker is that the machine can be preset to have particular odds as to how often the player will win.

Of course, with a video poker game, there are buttons and virtual opponents as opposed to being able to hold your cards and look other players in the eye. The nice thing about video poker games, is that no matter what version of this popular pastime you enjoy the most, it is likely to be available. If you don’t happen to have a favorite, are new to the game or just don’t know all the rules, keep reading for some of the basics.

If you want to play five card stud on a video game, you will notice that the play is exactly the same as at the table. To start, every player is given a card with the face down as well as one card that is face up. The person that has the lowest card with the face up needs to make a bet of half of the minimum amount or a full bet to initiate the game. In a clockwise order players may either raise the opening bet, fold their cards, or call. Cards are dealt until each player has a total of five cards. Then the fourth card is dealt, and the lowest bet is raised to double the original bet. Finally, the fifth and final card is given to all the players face up, followed with the final round of betting.

In Caribbean Stud Poker, including on video poker games, each player wagers against the dealer and not against each other. To play, each person must pay an ante just to see their cards. Then, if allowed, players may bet one dollar to enter the jackpot. Five cards are then dealt face down to every person that is playing as well as to the dealer, except the dealer’s fifth card is dealt face up. The players now have two options to choose from: they may either place a bet equal or larger than the original ante, or as in any poker game they may fold and withdraw from the current hand, forfeiting their ante.

After all the players have either bet or folded, the dealer then reveals the cards in his or her hand. In order to challenge a player’s hand, the dealer’s hand needs to have either an Ace and a King or better; if no player has this combination, the dealer will fold his hand and the ante is the only amount paid out, with the player’s bets being returned to them. If the dealer has an Ace and a King or better then the player’s cards and the dealer’s cards are shown and the best hand wins the pot.

Online and Real World Poker Differences

Posted by ArthurD | Online Casinos,Poker | Wednesday 21 April 2010 4:31 pm

For years Poker has been a booming game. Some have called it an enjoyable hobby, others a cutthroat sport. If not for online poker, the game would have never launched into iconic status. Let’s face it. Online poker is the one and only reason why the game grew at all.

It started some time ago with then thousands of people logging in to try their hand at this game. It soon became an addiction. Since then, many have ventured out into real world poker rooms and tournaments. Many online poker players today are “practicing” for the big-time. And many poker pros play online.

That said, there are two big differences between online poker and your brick and mortar poker room-and no, it’s not just the cigar smoke and sometimes annoying wait to get into a game. The two main differences are time and tells-the two T’s. Today, I’ll break them down for you.

Time

Online poker is a lightning fast game compared to real world poker. When you watch poker on TV, they actually do a major editing job to make it look more up to speed.

When you play online poker, you’re acting within 20-30 seconds. You either act before your timer goes down or you’re done. There isn’t much think time.

Now, play in the real world and it’s a drastic change. The game moves at a snail’s pace. For some this is good. You can sit there and think about what to do.

However, the slower game means less hands per hour, which in turn can mean lower profit per hour. If you’re a mechanical online poker player that just cranks out the profit per hand, real world play might not be good for you.

Tells

Countless articles and books have been written that deal with tells at the poker table. In fact, talk to any poker pro and he or she will talk about playing the player not the cards.

Good or bad, you can’t do this with online poker. Tells virtually don’t exist. Sure, you can pick up some playing habits if you play with someone long enough, but it’s difficult. There’s no way to study your opponent.

For some, this is a good thing. Your opponents can’t see you doing cartwheels, because you’ve just scored a full house on the river or picked up trips on the flop. But, true pros do their best work when they are sitting across from other players in the real world.

It’s my opinion that bluffing in online play is darn near stupid. The only way to bluff is to bet more or less and pray that your opponent(s) care. It just doesn’t have the same weight as the real world.

Good to Know Poker Tips

Posted by ArthurD | Poker | Thursday 18 March 2010 2:47 pm

Whether you are a professional poker player or simply a poker enthusiast, there is always room for improvement when it comes to playing this game. Poker is a very complex game that requires various skills and abilities such as patience, self-control, composure, anticipation and a solid strategic thinking. Although for some people it may seem like a simple game that revolves around the concept of luck, poker is in fact a very complicated game that requires a lot of strategizing and logical thinking. Even though most professional poker players may leave you with the impression that they are guiding their actions upon instinct and intuition, they actually follow a set of previously elaborated strategies that speculate every single detail and subtlety of the game.

The key to becoming a skilful poker player is to practice a lot and assist to as many poker games as you can. In order to assimilate the fundamentals of poker more rapidly, you shouldn’t hesitate to ask for the help of an experienced player. With the help of an experienced “poker coach”, you will be able to learn a lot of things about the game and you will be making money in no time! However, you should be aware of the fact that very few “coaches” will teach you everything they know about poker. This article is focused on sketching several aspects on poker that very few players will reveal to you: how to manage your cash and hold on to your winnings!

Even more important than winning money is to know how to hang on to it! Lured by the idea of winning even more money at poker, most players eventually end up by losing it all. Thus, a vital feature of poker involves proper management of your money. During a poker game, a successful, professional player should know precisely when to continue and when to stop by carefully analyzing his budget and the progression of that particular game. For instance, if you are satisfied with your overall winnings during a poker game, you shouldn’t rush in to make very high bids, as you can easily lose all your earnings! Regardless of how “lucky” you may feel, always think twice before throwing in all your winnings at a single poker game. When you feel content with your winnings accumulated during a poker game, you should either make smaller bids or even completely withdraw from the game in order to make sure that you will walk away with your earnings.

The same rules apply when you are losing at poker. If you lose a few consecutive hands during a poker game, it is advised to withdraw from the game and get yourself together before returning to the poker table. It is also not recommended to continue playing if you are unable to concentrate properly, as you are prone to make serious mistakes that will cost you a lot of money. Remember to always avoid playing poker if you are feeling tired, anxious or insecure. When fortune doesn’t seem to be on your side and you lose one game after another, it is best to call it a day. You should return to the poker table some other day, after you have regained your concentration and morale.

Another important thing regarding poker is to think in perspective. Before each game, you should always include the possibility that you may actually lose all your money! Thus, you should carefully analyze the situation of your bankroll between poker games and never throw in the game more money than you actually afford to lose! By thinking pragmatically and by properly managing your budget, you will be able to minimize your losses and hold on to your winnings. Spare yourself of a lot of frustration by following these simple rules!

Hot Tips to Bluffing at Poker and Texas Holdem

Posted by ArthurD | Poker,Texas Holdem | Monday 15 March 2010 3:23 pm

Learn the most important tricks to bluffing. Learn when to bluff, when not to bluff and even when to bluff that you are bluffing.

Bluffing in Poker and particularly in Texas Holdem is a very useful tool, but if it is not used properly it can be a very dangerous tool to try and use. If used right bluffing can give you the appearance of having a good hand when you have nothing and scare the other players into folding their hands, but if it is not done right then all that happens is that you lose some money.

1) Check to see that the group of players playing for the pot is small. The biggest reason why you should do this is that it is easier to fool a small group than a large one. Another viable problem is that if the players are many, some might simply be dumb and not fully understand the true extent of your bluff. Whatever the case you have to take into consideration that a large group is tougher to bluff. Do not argue. It is simply so.

2) Do not bluff if your hand is weaker than a pair and to be on the safe side, better to have at least two pairs even if these are weak. Note that a player or two will remain in the game even if they have no hand whatsoever. They hope to learn how others play so that they will be able to beat them in later rounds. Such players can be caused to fold if you bluff well. Other than that, always take into consideration that some player will always remaining thinking you are bluffing. So, at least have a good enough hand to beat them.

2) Do not bluff with nothing. Bluffing should be used to make a weak hand look better but not to try to make nothing look like something. Bluffing should only be done if you hold at least one pair. Some players will not back down from your bluff especially in the beginning of the game. They are trying to feel you out and see how you react in different situations. To fool them you are going to have to become a good actor.

d) If you win a round of betting and the other Texas holdem players see that you did it with a big hand, then for the next few rounds you are at a big advantage. The memory of your high-value Texas Holdem sequence will linger in your opponents’ minds and this will help you tremendously if you bluff. Each other player will think twice before challenging your hand.

e) Since you are playing Texas Holdem, pay attention to the cards that the dealers places face-up on the poker table. If you find that the cards down make up a weak pair, then start bluffing. Others will think you have the card to make up a triple, and will back off in fright.

6) Pay attention to how the other players at your table but and what their hands are at the end. Poker players who only bet when they have strong hands are the easiest to beat. All you have to do is wait till they are not betting and you know they have a weak hand so if you push them they will fold for fear of losing any more money on a bad hand.

Closure:
Bluffing is not very different than lying on a test or to friends. If you are a good liar, you will be able to bluff with a lot more confidence than others. But you need to reduce the amount you lie because whereas in life people tend to believe you, in Texas Hold’em, players tend not to believe you.

History Of Poker

Posted by ArthurD | Poker | Monday 15 March 2010 3:17 pm

Since its invention, poker has rapidly become one of the favorite gambling past times for many Americans, due to the ease with which it can be played. There is perhaps no other game of chance for which so many different variations have been created- there are literally hundreds of versions of poker.

Poker is intrinsically caught up in the history of America and American expansions. It is thought to have originated in New Orleans, where players would use a 20 card deck and bet on whose hand was the most valuable. As American settlement spread West up river systems, poker went along, including on riverboat passages up major waterways such as the Mississippi on river boats. Its expansion during this period has meant that it is an integral part of the popular telling of the history of the American West, and can be found in works of fiction and non-fiction, works of history and religion, documentaries and movies alike.

The full 52-card deck was introduced to the game after the expansion period, along with the idea of the flush. Variants of the game began to emerge during the American Civil War, and the game continued to be an integral part of the military, just as it had the development of the West. It is thought that it was the American military that spread the game throughout much of the rest of the world, especially in Asia.

Poker began to receive a lot of public attention when the World Series of Poker began in 1970. During this period, a heightened interest in the game meant that the market was ripe for development, in the form of poker rooms in major casinos as well as the development of strategy books and tips.

Poker experienced a down turn in the mid 1980s that continued right through to the new millennium. Many casinos shut down their poker rooms during this time in favor of more lucrative games which favored house odds (poker offers very little returns for a casino aside for a cut of the pot).

A return in popularity came in the development of several more tournaments for poker, mainly the brainchild of Stephen Lipscomb who developed the idea of the World Tour of Poker. Since the beginning of that show, with its reliance on innovative camera technology which allows viewers to see the cards of the players, poker popularity throughout the world has taken on astronomical proportions, particularly the Texas Hole “Em variation. Online poker sites have also contributed to the increased popularity of the game which has been described as “Every Man’s Game”. Professional poker players have become celebrities in their own right, and many celebrities are also turning to the game as their preferred method of entertainment. Some players, such as Jennifer Tilly, seem to have given up their former careers in order to play the game.

What to Look for In Online Poker Sites

Posted by ArthurD | Online Casinos,Poker | Friday 12 March 2010 4:34 pm

Online poker game websites have become more and more popular these days as a casino establishment alternative. They are a convenient way of playing a variety of poker games in the comfort of your own home. Online poker websites make virtual poker games readily available to the beginner and advanced poker player alike. However, there are a few things one should consider when trying to choose the perfect online poker website in which to play this entertaining game. Safety is one key thing to consider when looking to play poker games online and researching the site ahead of time may make your poker play a bit safer than if you were to simply jump right in without a second thought. Secondly, another thing that a prospective online poker player should look into with regard to an online poker website prior to beginning play is good odds as people who play this game online for money are looking to win. A third thing to search for within online poker websites relates to the type of poker games that the websites are offering. Lastly, it is always good to do some research with regard to what the betting limits will be prior to choosing an online poker website which you would like to utilize.

As internet safety is becoming a more serious concern these days, it is extremely important to know how your money will be exchanged before, during and after the poker games and what financial information you are going to have to give out in order to play poker online. In a world where internet scams are overly present, it is important to make sure that you are utilizing an online poker website that is a secure website. Therefore, it is important to know in advance that your financial information will not be transmitted in such a manner where there may be an opportunity for someone to get a hold of it and use it in a wrongful manner. Checking into all available safety features prior to starting to play online poker on a particular website is definitely a smart move and one which I highly recommend that you look into.

Another thing to look for when choosing a particular online poker website prior to playing this wonderful card game is what type of odds are going to be present in the online poker game. Online poker is a great way of having fun and maybe making a little bit of money in the process; however, it is important to know what your odds will be prior to sitting down at the virtual poker table. You will most likely be able to research odds by going onto the online poker website which you are thinking about using and seeing what they have to say on the subject. If that particular website does not post any odds information on it, then you might be better off moving on to another site that does publish that type of information.

As there are a variety of online poker games available to the beginner and advanced online poker player alike, it is important to know what online poker game websites offer with regard to particular types of poker games. It will not do you any good to start using a poker game website that only hosts a few types of poker games, especially if all of the ones which the website offers are ones in which you may be unfamiliar with. Therefore, it is best to research the online poker website prior to beginning a poker game so that you know what type of poker game will be played. If you are unfamiliar with the type of poker game being played but still want to give it a shot, why not try looking at a few other websites that describe the type of poker game which is being played on your chosen website. By doing a little research you will be able to brush up on the rules of that particular game thereby increasing your odds of winning.

Since many individuals have a set amount in mind that they wish to spend on entertainment such as online poker playing, it is important to look at different online poker game websites to see what their betting limits may be prior to utilizing a poker website. By searching different online poker websites you will be able to determine which website best fits your means. By doing a little research up front you are able to find out whether you want to use that particular website or if another poker gaming website is more your speed. Therefore, checking out the betting limits prior signing on with a particular online poker game website is highly advisable for poker players wishing to play online.

Because using the internet to peruse different online poker game websites will only tell you so much, you should also consider asking for recommendations from friends and family members. If you know any friends or family members that play poker online for fun, you should inquire whether or not they have any recommendations concerning the better online poker game websites. This will allow you to gain insight into what websites host the best odds, what ones have the lower betting limits and things of that sort. It is also a good way of finding out whether these individuals have had luck with a particular website or have been not so lucky with regards to winning on another online poker game website. Recommendations are a great way of retrieving some background information prior to getting settled with one particular online poker website. Always consider your options prior to choosing an online poker website because there will be ones that are better than other websites.

These are just a few things to consider when looking to find the perfect online poker website. If you take these tips into consideration, chances are that you will find the perfect online poker website that will make all of your gaming dreams come true.
